Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead

The Phantom Drophead Coupe occupies an awful lot of road, has the carbon footprint of a Chinese power station, and travels, at best, 15 miles for a gallon of fuel.
And when it costs - before options - £307,000, this is clearly motoring on an epic scale.
The team at Goodwood has worked 'tirelessly' to turn 2004's 100EX concept car into a reality. The DC weighs in at 2620kg, has a H-point comparable to an SUV and if wasn't made from aluminium, you'd need an HGV licence to drive it.
The lid under which the roof stows is finished in a 30-piece teak wood that supports the car's nautical inspiration, with rear-opening doors, which are elegant and surprisingly practical.
The Lexicon Logic 7 stereo is the best I've heard outside a professional recording studio. Unlike the (£6,462) stainless steel bonnet and (£5,698) teak roof 'deck', though, this comes as standard.
The Phantom has a 453bhp 6.75-litre V12 engine, but still no car is quieter, and the ride quality is pillowy, without disconnecting you completely from the real world.
You drive this thing with one finger, caressing it through a turn, with no envelope to push. Simply being in it is the point of it, irrespective of how many corners the road ahead has.
Which means that what we have here, with a dour, parsimonious Scot poised to run the country, the DC is the perfect vehicle for Britain in 2007.
Forget the Prius or Mondeo, this is where I'm going to be stuck in a traffic jam on the M25 on a hot day.
